On the Road Eats: North Austin

Hotel: Aloft Austin Northwest
Would I stay again?  Yes.  It was clean, convenient to our office and the staff was nice.  Options for amazing dining were very limited compared to downtown but it was easy on and off the highway to get me where I needed to be ontime.

Restaurants:

Dinner: Paul Martin’s American Grill
Would I dine again? Maybe
.  I ended up driving to Austin rather than flying from Dallas so I arrived at dinner time.  I decided to eat in the Domain area so I could have choices.  I wanted a nicer bar to sit, eat dinner and enjoy a glass of wine before heading to the hotel after an almost 4-hour drive.  The pork chop was good, the wine was fine and one of the two bartenders was very knowledgable.

Breakfast: One Taco
Would I dine again? Yes.
Love breakfast tacos and when in Austin, it is a must.  I found a small spot on the way to our office and it hit the spot.

Lunch: Rudy’s
Would I dine again? Yes.
I knew the local options were going to be a lot of chains so I stuck with one that I really enjoy.

Brisket and Sausage and Corn and Cole Slaw

Dinner: Soto
Would I dine again? YES
.  I asked a colleague in Austin where I could eat close to my hotel and he knows I enjoy great local spots.  His response…you won’t find what you are looking for.  I was so happy he was wrong.  When you arrive at Soto, you do not expect to see a Party City next store.  And then you walk into this very modern restaurant that delivers amazing service.  Now onto the food.  The server recommended a new sake to me and brought me a small edamame starter, I selected the chef’s choice for sushi and finished with a small appetizer since I was hungrier than I thought.  I would definitely go back even thought I blew through my per diem!

Lunch: Rosarito Food Truck
Would I dine again? Maybe.
I love food trucks and the tuna tostada I had was awesome.  The tempura rice bowl was just ok.  I find that tempura is just not my favorite anymore….but my mistake for ordering it.  But that tostada- fantastic!

This trip took place before all of the restrictions became our new reality and this will be my last trip for a while due to world events. I look forward to supporting more local restaurants once I get on the road again!

On the Road Eats: Bentonville, AR

RHotel: aloft Rogers-Bentonville
Would I stay again?
Yes.  I like the aLoft brand, the staff was nice and it was conveniently located to my clients and to downtown Bentonville.

Restaurants:

Lunch: The Preachers Son
Would I dine again?
Yes.  But I would try it for dinner.  My lunch was delicious but I was one of 4 tables so the experience was a bit different than a full restaurant.

Dinner: The Hive
Would I dine again?
Yes.  The restaurant is at the 21c hotel and they had their well known penguins in the restaurant.  I greatly enjoyed my pork chop for dinner and the cotton candy at the end of the meal.

Dessert:  The Spark Café/ Walton’s 5&10
Would I dine again?  Yes.  I usually like to check out the dessert menu where I have dinner but if I wanted a quick scoop, of ice cream and I was downtown, sure, I would return.

On the Road Eats: Minneapolis

Hotel: Aloft Minneapolis
Would I stay again? Possibly. I booked late and that was the option closest to the event I attended within my allowed rate. I liked the location because Izzy’s ice cream was nearby and had I been there longer in better weather, there was a park behind the property. We did enjoy our walk home from dinner but I would like to explore another area next time.

Restaurants:

Lunch:  McKinney Roe
Would I dine again? Yes.  Service was a but slow but the food was good. I opted for a burrata salad and added beets. It was the perfect meal after my flight.

Snack:  Izzy’s
Would I dine again? Yes.  I needed a pick me up after a few hours of email so I walked around the corner to this ice cream shop. I tried the sampler which is five small scoops-blueberry cheesecake, salted caramel, cookies n’ cream, chocolate peanut butter and chocolate caramel. YUM!

Dinner: Spoon and Stable
Would I dine again? Yes.  We did not have a reservation but got lucky to score three seats at the bar. I started with the tempura baby squash and ordered the half portion of spaghetti Nero. My pasta was awesome!

On the Road Eats: Chicago

Hotel: Aloft River North
Would I stay again? Yes!  Great River North location, lots of restaurants nearby with a great one connected to the lobby and easy to walk to catch a train.

Restaurants:

Lunch:  Sushi-San
Would I dine again? Yes but I would go for dinner and order something different.  The express lunch was not for me.

Dinner: The Smith
Would I dine again? Yes.  Food, service and price point were all great!  Easy to walk to from the hotel.

Lunch Day 2:  The Dearborn
Would I dine again? Yes, but I would not order this sandwich.  I liked the one at Beacon Tavern better but the first time I was here I had a great meal.
