On the Road Eats: New Bedford, Massachusetts

I have something to share with you.

Every time I see a show on food in New England, I decide my next summer vacation will be to that area.  Steamer clams, lobster rolls, belly clams…..WOW.  I only wish I could find a menu in Dallas with all of that!  But since I cannot, I made sure to get my fill while I was up in New Bedford this weekend.

Waterfront Grille
I posted on Chowhound recently to find a great seafood restaurant in New Bedford for my visit and got no response.  So I started using Yelp and other sites to find a spot to eat.  I knew my family would have their favorite spots but I thought it would be nice to visit somewhere new.  I started with clam chowder, then we ordered the whole belly clams to share and each ordered an entree, many of us getting the scallops(or scollops as my family says).  The bar was lively, the food was good and during the day, it’s probably a great spot to overlook the harbor.

The Cove Surf & Turf
I had to have belly clams again before I left town.  I ordered whole clams in Dallas once and the server came right back out of the kitchen to correct the menu mistake(they called strips whole clams and laughed when I asked about the belly).  The Cove is a small restaurant that does pick up or eat in and the people there are super nice.  We ordered a large plate of clams and a small basket of clam cakes.  I left New Bedford stuffed and happy.

Legal Sea Foods(at the Philadelphia airport)
IMG_9776Yes, it is a chain but mostly regional and I remembered having the most wonderful crab salad sandwich on a buttered bun so I had to grab one before I headed back to Texas. Options can be limited at the airport and I knew they had numerous locations all over Massachusetts.  Plus, I needed something fast and to-go.  The verdict:  Still delicious and didn’t mind breaking my no-chain restaurant rule!
